Optical character

Sigma redesigned its popular 150-600 Sports for mirrorless and cut it to 2100g with the tripod foot, much lighter than the DSLR version. Four FLD and two SLD elements are used to keep 600mm sharp and free of colour fringing, which is what wildlife and bird shooters care about most.

OS was rated at about 4 stops at launch and, with the OS2 firmware update (Ver.0.3 or later on Sony E), about 6.5 stops at the wide end and 5.5 at the long end, and the stepping-motor AF is tuned for tracking. Dual Action Zoom allows both ring and push-pull zooming, the zoom can be locked at any focal length, and the magnesium foot is Arca-type compatible. Close focus of 58cm gives 1:2.9 at 180mm.

Reviewer consensus

Reviewers rate it sharp at 600mm wide open by the standards of 600mm zooms, often close to Sony's 200-600 G and a little behind it in contrast at the long end. Colour fringing is low and the background blur at 600mm is pleasant.

AF is fast and reliable for birds in flight on recent Sony bodies, though the stepping motor is a little behind Sony's 200-600 G for the most erratic subjects. The barrel extension and front-heavy balance at 600mm come up in most reviews, as does the lack of teleconverter support on Sony E.

Owner sentiment

Owners choose it over Sony's 200-600 for the wider 150mm end, the shorter collapsed length for travel, and the push-pull zoom. Bird and wildlife shooters report a high keeper rate and like the zoom lock and custom switch.

Complaints are about weight on long hikes, a front-heavy feel when extended, and the 95mm filter size. Some owners report occasional focus hunting against busy backgrounds and early owners wished the original 4-stop OS were stronger, which the OS2 firmware update addressed.
