Optical character

Sigma's 300-600mm is a constant f/4 zoom that covers the job of a 600mm F4 prime and can pull back to 300mm without a lens change. The zoom is internal, so the 469.9mm barrel never extends and the balance stays near the camera. Six FLD elements and one SLD element keep colour fringing low at both ends, and Sigma's own MTF charts are close to flat across the frame at 300mm and 600mm.

Focus is driven by an HLA linear motor, and optical stabilisation is rated at 5.5 stops at 600mm with a dedicated panning mode. The barrel is magnesium alloy with a carbon hood and heat-reflecting paint, and it adds a function ring for focus recall or constant-speed power focus. At 3,970g it is a monopod or tripod lens for sports, motorsport and wildlife, and on Sony E it cannot take Sigma's teleconverters.

Reviewer consensus

Reviewers found it sharp wide open across the whole range, with 600mm results that hold up well against dedicated 600mm F4 primes and only a small gain from stopping down. Autofocus is fast and accurate for birds in flight and field sports on recent Sony bodies, and the stabiliser is very effective for a lens of this length.

The reservations are practical: nearly 4kg, a price that puts it with first-party exotic telephotos, and no teleconverter support on the Sony E version. Testers also noted that the minimum focus distance of 2.8–4.5m limits close work with small subjects.

Owner sentiment

Owners who shoot field sports and wildlife say the zoom range replaces both a 300mm F2.8 and a 600mm F4 in the bag, and that framing a game or an animal without moving is the main benefit. Build quality, the internal zoom and the Arca-Swiss compatible foot get frequent praise.

The common complaints are weight for handheld use, the size of the case and hood, and that Sony users cannot add Sigma's 1.4x or 2x converters. Some also point out that the US price rose after launch.
