Optical character

Sony's first zoom to reach 800mm is built for birders who are always short on focal length. Like the 200-600 G it zooms internally, so the 346mm barrel keeps its balance, but it starts at 400mm and weighs 2475g with 105mm front filters.

Six ED elements control colour fringing and an 11-blade aperture keeps out-of-focus highlights round. Two linear motors drive focus, fast enough for 120fps bursts on the A9 III. It focuses to 1.7m at 400mm for 0.23x, has three focus-hold buttons, a fluorine-coated front element and dust and moisture resistance, and accepts both teleconverters for up to 1600mm.

Reviewer consensus

Reviewers find it sharp across the range for its class, with 800mm wide open good enough that it often matches or beats a 200-600 plus 1.4x converter. Fringing is low and backgrounds blur smoothly at these focal lengths. AF is quick and confident in good light; the f/8 long end limits it as the light drops.

The usual reservations are size and weight, the large front filter, and the inevitable heat shimmer and handholding difficulty at 800mm. Teleconverter use is possible but costs light and contrast. Most conclude it is good value for reach that otherwise requires a far more expensive prime.

Owner sentiment

Owners report keeper rates at 800mm that they could not get from cropping or converters, and the close focus for a lens this long is popular for small birds in gardens. The internal zoom and rotating collar make it manageable on a gimbal or monopod.

Complaints are mostly about weight on long hikes, f/8 at dawn and dusk, and the need for fast shutter speeds at 800mm even with OSS. Some owners keep a 100-400 alongside it because 400mm is a tight starting point.
