Optical character

Tamron's 50-300mm is about the size of a typical 70-300mm but starts at 50mm and focuses to 1:2 at the wide end. That makes it a one-lens kit for travel, hiking and zoo trips: a normal view for scenes, 300mm for wildlife and sport, and half-life-size close-ups of flowers and insects.

It has 19 elements in 14 groups including two XLD and two LD elements, Tamron's VC stabilisation, a VXD linear motor, BBAR-G2 coating and a moisture-resistant barrel with a fluorine-coated front element. It weighs 665g and takes 67mm filters.

Reviewer consensus

Reviewers find it sharp in the centre through most of the range, with the best results between 50mm and about 200mm and some softening at 300mm f/6.3 that improves at f/8. The 1:2 close focus at 50mm performs well, and VC gives a useful few stops of steadiness, especially on older or non-stabilised bodies.

AF is fast and quiet and tracks well in good light. The slow aperture limits it in dim conditions and for background separation, and the extending barrel adds length at 300mm. It is generally rated as good value against both Tamron's own 70-300mm and first-party alternatives.

Owner sentiment

Owners like that it replaces a standard zoom and a telephoto for day trips and that the close focus gives them a near-macro option without another lens. The weight and 67mm filters are often praised.

Complaints are mainly about f/6.3 indoors or at dusk, the barrel extension, and edge softness at 300mm. Some note there is no AF/MF switch or VC switch on the barrel, so settings live in the camera or Lens Utility.
