Optical character

One of the first two Batis lenses, the 2/25 is a compact Distagon wide-angle that delivers high contrast and crisp detail from f/2. Four aspherical elements and anomalous-partial-dispersion glass control distortion and colour fringing, and the 0.20m close focus allows near-far compositions with a strong foreground.

At 335g it is light for a fast 25mm, and the sealed metal barrel, OLED distance and depth-of-field display, and quiet linear-motor AF make it a natural walk-around wide for landscape, street, interiors and travel.

Reviewer consensus

Reviewers rated it among the sharpest 24-25mm autofocus lenses on Sony E when it appeared, with strong centre resolution at f/2, good edges by f/4-5.6, low distortion and well-controlled lateral colour. Coma is moderate, making it usable for astrophotography stopped down slightly.

Criticisms focus on noticeable vignetting wide open and on materials: the body is lighter and more plastic inside than older ZEISS lenses. Testers also noted that newer 24mm GM-class designs have since matched or passed it, while the Batis remains appealing for its size and rendering.

Owner sentiment

Owners praise the 'ZEISS look': punchy contrast, saturated colour and a sense of depth. It is often paired with the Batis 85 as a light two-lens kit, and many keep it on the camera for travel.

Common complaints are the rubber focus ring, which picks up lint and can degrade over time, focus-by-wire manual focus and the OLED display adding a small battery drain. Some users also report occasional AF hunting in dim light on older bodies.
