Optical character
When it arrived in 2018, the FE 24mm F1.4 GM showed that a fast G Master wide could be small and light at 445g. Two XA elements and three ED elements give high resolution from f/1.4, and the design keeps sagittal flare, the comet-shaped coma that ruins stars, very low.
It suits astro, environmental portraits, events and landscapes. An 11-blade aperture gives smooth background blur for a wide angle, and the lens has an aperture ring with click switch, a focus-hold button and dust and moisture resistance. Focus is driven by a Direct Drive SSM motor rather than the newer XD linear motors.
Reviewer consensus
Reviewers measured excellent sharpness from f/1.4 across most of the frame and some of the best coma control of any fast 24mm, which made it a favourite for night-sky work. Longitudinal colour fringing is low and the bokeh is smooth for the focal length.
The main reservations are vignetting at f/1.4 and the DDSSM autofocus, which is quick and quiet but slower than Sony's later XD-motor primes. Third-party 24mm f/1.4 lenses cost much less, though they are usually larger.
Owner sentiment
Owners describe it as the lens that made fast 24s practical to carry, and astro and wedding shooters mention the sharp, coma-free corners most often. Build quality and the aperture ring get regular praise.
The common complaints are price, slight AF hunting in very low light, and some focus breathing in video. A few owners mention flare from strong light sources at the frame edge.
