Optical character

This is a dedicated 2.5x–5x ultra-macro that only works at magnifications above life size. A ring sets the magnification, the barrel extends as you go, and you focus by moving the camera; it cannot focus at normal distances or infinity. Working distance stays around 4–5cm, and the slim 58mm barrel leaves room to light the subject.

It is an 8-element, 6-group all-metal design with one low-dispersion element. It costs about half as much as the Canon MP-E 65mm it competes with and weighs roughly half as much. A tripod collar and a front LED light are optional extras.

Reviewer consensus

Testers rate it very sharp for its magnification. At 2.5x it peaks around f/4, and at 5x it is already diffraction-limited wide open (effective aperture about f/17) but still very good. Above f/8 at 5x, diffraction softens it noticeably. Chromatic aberration is practically absent, and pincushion distortion is negligible.

The drawbacks are a dark band of mechanical vignetting along the edges at f/2.8–f/4, veiling flare with backlights in the studio, and handling details. The aperture ring has uneven click spacing and a loose indicator ring, and the magnification ring is stiff. With no electronic contacts, you see a dark viewfinder when stopped down.

Owner sentiment

Macro hobbyists call it the most affordable route past 1:1 and a lot of fun. Many say their sharpest focus-stacked images of insect eyes, snowflakes and textures came from it.

The learning curve is steep: depth of field is wafer-thin, the slightest shake ruins frames, and serious results usually need a focusing rail, stacking and strong lighting. Some owners report dust inside new copies, which shows at these magnifications.
