Optical character

The newest member of Cosina's apochromatic family brings the APO-Lanthar recipe to 28mm. Six anomalous partial-dispersion elements and two double-sided aspherics keep longitudinal colour fringing close to zero, and a floating element group holds sharpness from 0.28m to infinity.

At 325g and under 59mm long it is a small, dense all-metal lens with a 49mm filter thread, a 12-blade aperture and a click-stop switch for video. Electronic contacts pass EXIF data, trigger focus magnification and feed distance information to in-body stabilisation.

Reviewer consensus

Early reviews find very high resolution in the centre and mid-frame from f/2, with almost no colour fringing and low coma, which makes it a good night-sky lens. Colours and micro-contrast are in line with the 35mm and 50mm APO-Lanthars.

The weak spots are the outer corners of full frame, which trail the rest of the image and show some astigmatism, strong light fall-off wide open, and visible focus breathing. Bokeh is clean but not as smooth as the 35mm APO's.

Owner sentiment

Owners who already use the 35mm or 50mm APO-Lanthar describe it as the wide companion they were waiting for, praising the compact size, the smooth damped helicoid and how little post-processing the files need.

Common complaints are the price relative to fast autofocus 28mm primes, the need to correct vignetting, and the fact that the focus throw is long for quick zone focusing. Some street shooters still prefer the much smaller Color-Skopar 28mm.
