Optical character

The newest member of Cosina's apochromatic family brings the APO-Lanthar recipe to 28mm on Nikon Z. Six anomalous partial-dispersion elements and two double-sided aspherics keep longitudinal colour fringing close to zero, and a floating element group holds sharpness from 0.28m to infinity.

At 350g and 60mm long it is a small, dense all-metal lens with a 58mm filter thread, a 12-blade aperture and a reversible bayonet hood. Electronic contacts pass EXIF data, enable 3-axis in-body stabilisation and support Nikon's focus aids. Unlike the E-mount version, the aperture ring has no de-click switch.

Reviewer consensus

Testing on Nikon Z finds very high resolution and clarity from f/2, with well-controlled colour aberrations and coma, which makes it a good night-sky lens. Flare, glare and ghosting resistance are very good, and colours and micro-contrast are in line with the 35mm and 50mm APO-Lanthars.

The weak spots are the outer corners of full frame, which trail the rest of the image, strong light fall-off wide open, and focus breathing of around 8% from infinity to close focus, which is obvious in video. Bokeh is pleasant but not as smooth as the 35mm APO's.

Owner sentiment

Owners who already use the 35mm or 50mm APO-Lanthar on Z bodies describe it as the wide companion they were waiting for, praising the compact size, the smooth damped helicoid and how little post-processing the files need.

Common complaints are the price relative to autofocus 28mm primes, the need to correct vignetting, the lack of weather sealing and a de-click option, and a focus throw that is long for quick zone focusing.
