Optical character

Sigma's first mirrorless 24-70 Art brought near-G Master sharpness to Sony E for about half the price of Sony's lens at the time. The 19-element design uses six FLD, two SLD and three aspherical elements, and it keeps contrast high across most of the frame from f/2.8 through the range.

It is a big, metal-heavy zoom at 830g, with an 82mm filter thread, a zoom lock, a dust- and splash-resistant build and Nano Porous Coating against flare. Close focus is 18cm at 24mm (1:2.9). A stepping motor handles AF, and there is no aperture ring; both were added on the 2024 DG DN II, which replaced this lens.

Reviewer consensus

Reviewers found it very sharp in the centre at every focal length and close to the original Sony FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM overall, with the corners at 24mm and 70mm wide open as the softest areas. Colour fringing and flare were well handled, and the 11-blade aperture gave smooth backgrounds for a zoom.

The common criticisms were weight and size compared with Tamron's 28-75mm, and AF that was quick for general work but less assured than Sony's linear motors for tracking fast action. Some early copies showed AF and stabilisation hiccups on certain Sony bodies that later firmware addressed.

Owner sentiment

Owners rated it highly as a working event and wedding zoom and many bought it instead of the Sony GM for the price difference. The build quality and the useful close focus at 24mm come up often.

The usual complaints were the 830g weight on long days, occasional AF hunting in dim venues, and some reports of copy variation. With the DG DN II on sale it is now mostly bought used, where it remains good value.
