Optical character

The second-generation 24-70 Art fixes most of what held the original back. It is about 100g lighter at 735g, switches to an HLA linear motor that Sigma rates at three times the speed, and adds an aperture ring with click and lock switches plus two AFL buttons. It keeps the 82mm filter thread, the 11-blade aperture and the zoom lock.

The optical design now has six FLD, two SLD and five aspherical elements, with better control of sagittal coma and lateral colour towards the edges. Close focus improves to 17cm at 24mm (1:2.7), focus breathing is reduced for video, and the barrel is dust- and splash-resistant with Nano Porous Coating against flare.

Reviewer consensus

Reviewers rate it among the sharpest standard zooms on Sony E, with noticeably better corners than the first version and results close to the Sony FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II across the range. Flare resistance and colour correction are strong, and out-of-focus areas are smooth for a zoom.

The linear-motor AF is a clear step up, keeping pace with Sony bodies for events and moderate action, though some testers still give Sony's GM II the edge for demanding tracking. The remaining drawbacks are that it is a little heavier and longer than the GM II and that the price rose over the first version.

Owner sentiment

Owners who moved from the original notice the faster, quieter AF and the lower weight straight away, and the aperture ring and AFL buttons are popular with hybrid shooters. Many wedding and event photographers describe it as a lens that stays on the camera.

Complaints are mild: it is still a large lens on compact bodies, the zoom ring direction and hood size draw comments, and some owners debate whether the gap to the cheaper Tamron 28-75 G2 justifies the cost.
