Optical character
Sony cut the standard f/2.8 zoom down to 24-50mm to make it small: 440g and 92.3mm long, roughly 250g lighter than the 24-70 GM II. That makes it a practical f/2.8 zoom for A7C bodies, travel and walk-around use, at the cost of the 50-70mm portrait range.
Four aspherical and two ED elements keep the image sharp, and the 11-blade aperture gives smooth background blur. Two linear motors handle focus fast enough for the A9 III's burst rates. It has a declickable aperture ring, a focus-hold button and dust and moisture resistance, and it focuses to 0.19m at 24mm in AF.
Reviewer consensus
Reviewers found it very sharp in the centre at f/2.8 throughout the range, with corners at 24mm that improve noticeably by f/4. AF is fast and quiet, and breathing is well controlled for video.
The main reservations are the short 50mm long end, visible distortion and vignetting that need correction, and a price close to third-party 24-70 f/2.8 zooms with more range. Most see it as a size-first choice rather than a 24-70 replacement.
