Optical character

Sigma's 28-45 was the first full-frame zoom with a constant f/1.8 aperture. It replaces a 28mm, 35mm and 40mm prime set with one lens that keeps prime-like depth of field and low-light ability. The range is short on purpose: it is meant for documentary, wedding and video work where a fast standard view matters more than reach.

The zoom and focus are internal, so the 153mm length never changes, which suits gimbals. Optics include five SLD and three aspherical elements, focus breathing is kept low, and close focus is a constant 30cm (1:4 at 45mm). It has an HLA linear motor, a de-clickable aperture ring with a lock, two AFL buttons and a dust- and splash-resistant barrel.

Reviewer consensus

Reviewers found it as sharp as good primes at f/1.8 across the range, with only a slight drop in the extreme corners at 28mm, and very well corrected for colour fringing. Bokeh is smooth for a zoom, though not quite as soft as a dedicated f/1.4 prime.

The objections are size and weight: at 950g and over 15cm long it is much bigger than the primes it replaces, and the 28–45mm range is narrow. AF is fast and quiet for stills and video, and the internal zoom and low breathing make it a favourite for filmmaking.

Owner sentiment

Owners shooting events and video say it lets them work with one lens in dim venues, and many sold a set of primes after buying it. The constant length, aperture ring and smooth AF for video come up repeatedly.

The common complaints are the weight on long handheld days, the front-heavy balance on smaller bodies, and the short range, which some owners say forces them to pair it with a 70-200mm or an 85mm prime.
