Optical character

The 20-60 is Sigma's small everyday zoom that starts properly wide. It covers 20mm to 60mm in a 375g, 88mm-long body with a 67mm filter thread, and opens to f/2.8 at 20mm before closing to f/4 at the long end. The idea is a single walk-around lens for travel, hiking and video that does not give up the 20mm view most standard zooms miss.

The 15-element design uses three SLD and three aspherical elements. Close focus is a strong point: 15.8cm at 28mm gives up to 1:2.3 magnification, enough for detail shots of food or plants. An HLA linear motor drives AF, focus breathing is kept low for video, and the barrel is dust- and splash-resistant with a water- and oil-repellent front element.

Reviewer consensus

The lens was announced in September 2026 and independent test coverage is still thin. Launch coverage places it against Sony's FE 20-70mm F4 G and Sigma's own 28-70mm F2.8 Contemporary: it is shorter at the long end than the Sony but brighter at 20mm, and smaller and lighter than either.

Sigma's published MTF charts show good centre contrast at both ends with a drop towards the edges at 20mm wide open, a typical pattern for a compact wide zoom that relies on in-camera distortion correction. The external zoom, variable aperture and lack of an aperture ring or custom buttons are the obvious compromises for the size.

Owner sentiment

There is little owner feedback yet. Early interest centres on the weight and the 20mm start, with photographers who travel light or film handheld seeing it as a replacement for a 20mm prime plus a standard zoom.

The questions buyers raise are about the f/4 long end for portraits, how much of the 20mm image depends on distortion correction, and how it compares with the Sony 20-70 G for the price.
