Sigma's first mirrorless 24-70 Art gave L-Mount and Sony E users a constant f/2.8 standard zoom for about half the price of the first-party lenses of the time. The 19-element design uses six FLD, two SLD and three aspherical elements, with Nano Porous Coating against flare and an 11-blade rounded aperture.
On L-Mount it is an 835g, 122.9mm metal-and-TSC zoom with an 82mm filter thread, a zoom lock at 24mm, an AFL button and dust- and splash-resistant construction. Close focus is 18cm at 24mm (1:2.9). Focus is driven by a stepping motor, and there is no aperture ring. Sigma has discontinued it in favour of the lighter 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN II.
Reviewer consensus
Reviewers found the centre very sharp, particularly at the wide end, but the corners soft at f/2.8, improving to good or very good by f/5.6 to f/8. Uncorrected files show strong barrel distortion at 24mm and heavy vignetting, which profiles largely fix, and image quality drops off at close focusing distances. Lateral colour is low, though some axial fringing shows wide open, and flare resistance is good.
Bokeh is a strength for a zoom, with round highlights and smooth transitions. AF is quiet and very repeatable, with no focus breathing, but not as quick as the best first-party lenses. Build and sealing are rated highly; the stiff zoom ring, extending barrel and weight drew criticism, and value was the main reason testers recommended it.
