Optical character
Panasonic's professional standard zoom for the S system is a heavyweight: 935g, 140mm long and 82mm filters, with a barrel that extends by about 25mm at 70mm. Eighteen elements in 16 groups include three aspherical, four ED and one UHR element, and a double focus system using a linear motor and a stepping motor drives AF. Panasonic says focus breathing is suppressed for video.
The constant f/2.8 aperture and 11-blade circular diaphragm suit portraits and low light, but there is no optical stabilisation, so it relies on the body's IBIS. The barrel has no switches: a focus clutch handles AF/MF and reveals a distance scale. It is dust and splash resistant and rated to -10°C. Close focus is 0.37m throughout, for 0.25x at 70mm.
Reviewer consensus
Reviewers agree it is superbly built and handles very well, with fast, silent autofocus for stills and smooth, quiet transitions for video. Colour fringing is close to invisible, distortion is minimal after the automatic corrections, and wide-open vignetting is mild. Bokeh is smooth and stays round to about f/5.6, with only slight cat's-eye shapes in the corners at f/2.8. Focus breathing is very well controlled.
Opinions on sharpness differ. One test found it tack sharp from centre to corners; another measured excellent centre sharpness but underwhelming corners wider than f/5.6 and weaker results than Sigma's 24-70mm f/2.8 Art in the 50-70mm range. Flare is reasonably controlled, with some ghosting when the sun is in the frame. The recurring criticism is price: Sigma's L-Mount 24-70mm costs about half as much and matches it optically, so the Panasonic's case rests on its build, focus clutch and video focusing.
