Optical character
The second-generation 24-70 Art fixes most of what held the original back. On L-Mount it is 745g and 120.2mm long, about 10% lighter and 7% smaller than the first version, and it switches to an HLA linear motor that Sigma rates at more than three times the original's maximum drive speed. It adds an aperture ring with click and lock switches and a second AFL button on top of the barrel, and keeps the 82mm filter thread, the 11-blade aperture and the zoom lock.
The 19-element design now has six FLD, two SLD and five aspherical elements, aimed at better sagittal coma and lateral colour control toward the edges. Close focus improves to 17cm at 24mm (1:2.7), Sigma designed it to minimise focus breathing for video, and the barrel is dust- and splash-resistant with a water- and oil-repellent front element.
Reviewer consensus
Reviewers rate it as sharp and detailed across the zoom range, with a flat field. Centre detail is strong from f/2.8 at every focal length; the corners are a little softer and darker wide open and peak around f/8, and 70mm gains clearly from stopping down to f/4. Colour fringing is negligible, flare is hard to provoke, and the 11-blade aperture gives smooth, well-behaved bokeh.
The HLA motor is fast and responsive, with essentially instant continuous AF, smooth focus pulls and minimal breathing; a test on Lumix S bodies found tracking strong. Handling gains, including the de-clickable aperture ring and two function buttons, are welcome. Testers note that Sony's GM II is slightly sharper at 70mm f/2.8, that edges soften at close range, and that 82mm filters and no optical stabilisation are the trade-offs.
