Optical character
The G2 is the first Tamron-branded 70-180mm for Nikon Z; the original non-VC design only reached the mount as Nikon's own NIKKOR Z 70-180mm f/2.8. It offers constant f/2.8 with VC stabilisation at 865g, takes 67mm filters, and focuses to 0.3m at 70mm (1:2.6). That makes it a much lighter alternative to the NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S, and with the 16-30mm and 28-75mm G2 it completes Tamron's light f/2.8 trio for Z.
The 20-element design uses one XLD, three LD, two molded-glass and one hybrid aspherical element, with BBAR-G2 coating. A VXD linear motor drives focus with Nikon Eye AF and M/A override, and the barrel adds a zoom lock, a custom switch and a USB-C port for TAMRON Lens Utility, along with moisture-resistant seals and a fluorine-coated front element.
Reviewer consensus
Reviewers of the same optics on Sony found it sharper than the original 70-180, especially in the corners at 180mm, and very good at f/2.8 throughout. Bokeh is smooth, flare resistance is good, and the VC helps on older Z bodies and for handheld video. Close focus at the wide end is very practical.
AF is fast and accurate for portraits, events and most sport. The extending barrel, the zoom direction opposite to NIKKOR lenses, and the shorter reach than a 70-200 remain the trade-offs. It is generally rated the value pick among fast telephoto zooms.
Owner sentiment
Nikon Z owners describe it as the lightest way to get f/2.8 telephoto with stabilisation on the system, and like the zoom lock and USB-C configuration. Many waited for it after the G2 appeared on Sony in 2023.
Complaints include the reverse zoom direction, the barrel extension and the lack of a tripod collar. Some find 180mm a little short for field sports, and the Z version has been out for only a year, so long-term reports are limited.
