Optical character
The second S-line 70-200mm f/2.8 keeps the internal zoom of the original but sheds about a quarter of the weight: 998g without the collar, the lightest full-frame mirrorless 70-200mm f/2.8 at launch by Nikon's count. The optical formula drops to 18 elements, adding Super ED and aspherical ED glass alongside the SR and fluorite elements, with Meso Amorphous and ARNEO coatings.
Focus now comes from Nikon's Silky Swift voice-coil motors in a multi-focusing layout, which Nikon rates much faster than the first generation. Close focus improves to 0.38m at 70mm (0.3x), the diaphragm moves to 11 blades, and VR reaches 5.5 stops, or 6 with Synchro VR bodies. It works with both Z teleconverters.
Reviewer consensus
Early reviews describe it as at least as sharp as the excellent first generation, with very even performance across the frame at f/2.8 and smoother bokeh from the 11-blade aperture. Flare and ghosting are well suppressed. The voice-coil AF is the headline change: it is faster and quieter and tracks better while zooming, putting it level with the quickest 70-200s on any system.
Critics point to the higher launch price, the loss of the OLED information panel and DISP button found on the original, and the still-modest 0.3x magnification. Long-term data on durability and sample variation was limited at the time of writing.
Owner sentiment
Early owners highlight the weight drop and balance, saying it handles more like a 70-200 f/4 on Z8 and Z9 bodies, and report very fast and confident AF for sport and events. The closer minimum focus is welcome for detail shots.
The main complaints are the price over the discounted first generation and the removed OLED panel. Some also note that Nikon's tripod collar is a separate part that adds back much of the weight.
