Optical character

Nikon's lightweight f/2.8 telephoto zoom is built on the optical design of Tamron's first 70-180mm, reworked with a Nikon barrel, a stepping motor and Nikon's own firmware. It gives Z shooters a constant f/2.8 zoom at 795g with 67mm filters, at less than half the price of the S-line 70-200.

The formula uses five ED elements, one Super ED element and three aspherical elements. Unlike the Tamron original, it keeps autofocus at its 0.27m minimum distance at 70mm (0.48x), and it accepts Nikon's Z teleconverters. There is no VR, so stabilisation comes from the body's IBIS, and a customisable control ring sits behind the zoom ring.

Reviewer consensus

Reviewers found it sharp in the centre at f/2.8 across the range, with corners that trail slightly at 180mm wide open and improve by f/4. Colour fringing and distortion are well controlled, and out-of-focus areas are smooth for a lens of this size. The stepping-motor AF is quick and quiet for events, portraits and casual sport, though it does not track as tenaciously as the S-line 70-200.

The common reservations are the missing VR on older or DX bodies without IBIS, the extending barrel, the short 180mm reach and the lack of any AF/MF or function buttons. Teleconverter use works but is best treated as an occasional extra rather than a wildlife solution.

Owner sentiment

Owners like the size and weight for weddings, travel and hiking, and many pair it with the 28-75mm f/2.8 as a light two-lens kit. The close focus at 70mm with AF gets frequent praise for detail shots and flowers.

Complaints centre on the barrel extension when zooming, the absence of switches and buttons, and the fact that the cheaper Tamron G2 for Z now adds VR. Some users note focus breathing in video.
