Optical character

The first S-line 70-200mm f/2.8 was Nikon's statement telephoto zoom for the Z system, and it set a very high optical bar. It is an internal-zoom design built around Nikon's first SR (Short-wavelength Refractive) element plus a fluorite element, six ED and two aspherical elements, giving corner-to-corner sharpness at f/2.8 from 70 to 200mm.

Two stepping motors drive a multi-focusing system, and VR is rated at 5.5 stops. Handling is pro-grade: an OLED information panel, two L-Fn buttons, a control ring, a focus limiter and magnesium-alloy parts with full sealing. Close focus of 0.5m at 70mm is unusually short for the class. The S II replaced it in 2026.

Reviewer consensus

Testers rated it among the sharpest 70-200mm f/2.8 zooms made for any system, with excellent results wide open across the frame, very low chromatic aberration and minimal focus breathing. Flare resistance with Nano Crystal and ARNEO coatings is strong, and bokeh is smooth with mild cat's-eye shapes in the corners.

AF is fast, quiet and accurate for sports and events, though measured against the S II and rival linear-motor designs it is no longer the quickest. The main criticisms were the 1360g weight, the price and the 0.2x maximum magnification.

Owner sentiment

Owners describe it as the lens they reach for most at weddings, sports and portraits, and praise its consistency: sharp wide open, reliable AF and effective VR. The internal zoom keeps it balanced on gimbals.

The common complaints are size and weight on long days and the tripod collar, which some find bulky. Since the S II launched, the first generation is being sold off and is good value used or at clearance prices.
