Optical character
It was the first zoom for Nikon Z to open to f/2 at the wide end, and it covers 35mm to 150mm while staying at f/2.8 or faster throughout. For portrait, wedding and event photographers it replaces a 35mm prime, an 85mm prime and much of a 70-200 with a single lens.
The optics use 21 elements in 15 groups with four LD and three molded-glass aspherical elements. A VXD linear motor drives focus with Nikon Eye AF and M/A override, and the barrel has an AF/MF switch, a custom switch, a zoom lock, a customisable Focus Set button, a USB-C port for TAMRON Lens Utility, moisture-resistant seals and a fluorine-coated front element. At 1190g and with 82mm filters, it is a heavy lens.
Reviewer consensus
Reviewers find it sharp in the centre across the range from wide open, with the corners slightly weaker at the long end and at f/2. Background blur is smooth for a zoom, and at 150mm f/2.8 subject separation is close to what a fast short-tele prime gives. Lateral colour and vignetting are visible uncorrected but are handled by Nikon's in-camera corrections.
AF on Z bodies is fast and accurate with eye detection and keeps up with events and candid work. The criticisms are weight, front-heaviness on smaller bodies such as the Z5 or Zf, the lack of stabilisation, and a zoom ring that turns the opposite way to NIKKOR lenses.
Owner sentiment
Wedding and event shooters on Nikon Z say it lets them work with one body and one lens for most of the day, and many sold a 24-70 and 85mm prime after buying it. The extra stop at 35mm helps in dim venues, and the Z version was welcomed as a lens Nikon itself does not offer.
Common complaints are the 1.2kg weight in long sessions, the 82mm filter size, the reversed zoom direction for Nikon users, and the 35mm wide end being too tight for some group and venue shots.
