Optical character

Nikon's travel superzoom packs 24-200mm, 5-stop VR and weather sealing into 570g, with a 67mm filter thread. It is the one-lens answer for trips, hikes and family days, where swapping lenses is impractical and the light is usually good.

It was the first non-S-Line NIKKOR Z with ARNEO Coat, and the front element is fluorine coated. A switch locks the zoom at 24mm for transport, and a quiet stepping motor drives AF. A control ring can be set to aperture, exposure compensation or focus. Close focus is modest, at 0.5m and 0.28x.

Reviewer consensus

Reviewers call it a strong superzoom: sharp in the centre throughout the range, with edges and corners weaker at the extremes, especially at 200mm wide open, and best results around f/8. VR is effective and AF is quick and quiet for a lens of this type.

The usual superzoom caveats apply. Distortion and vignetting are heavy without correction, the f/6.3 long end pushes ISO up indoors, and background blur is limited. Testers consider it a convenience lens that does not replace the 24-120mm f/4 S or a dedicated telephoto.

Owner sentiment

Owners use it as their travel and hiking lens and praise how small it is when retracted, the VR and how good the files look for the range. Many say it stays on the camera for whole trips.

Complaints are about low-light performance at 200mm, the 7-blade aperture's busy bokeh, and softer corners at the long end. Some note the barrel lock is necessary to stop it extending when carried.
