Optical character

The second-generation 24-70mm f/2.8 S was the first lens in its class with an internal zoom, so the barrel never changes length, and at 675g it was also the lightest 24-70mm f/2.8 for full-frame mirrorless when it launched. That makes it well suited to gimbals and harder to get dust inside, and it drops the filter size from 82mm to 77mm.

Nikon's Silky Swift voice coil motors drive a multi-focusing system that Nikon rates at about five times faster than the original. An 11-blade aperture, Meso Amorphous and ARNEO coatings, a focus limiter, an L-Fn button and 0.24m close focus at 24mm (0.32x at 70mm) round out a lens built for hybrid stills and video work.

Reviewer consensus

Early reviews rate it at least as sharp as the excellent original across the frame, with better flare resistance and smoother, rounder out-of-focus highlights from the 11-blade aperture. Autofocus is very fast and silent, and focus breathing is well controlled for video.

The main reservations are the high launch price and the fixed length. The barrel is long at 142mm even at 24mm, so it packs less compactly than retracting zooms. Some testers say the original is still the better buy at its discounted price for stills-only shooters.

Owner sentiment

Owners praise the AF speed on Z8 and Z9 bodies, the balance from the internal zoom, the lower weight and the switch to 77mm filters shared with other Nikon lenses. Video shooters like that the length and balance stay put on gimbals.

Complaints focus on the price, the loss of the original's OLED display, and its length in the bag. Long-term reliability reports are still limited because the lens is new.
