Optical character

This is Nikon's affordable constant-aperture standard zoom: f/2.8 from 28mm to 75mm in 565g, at roughly half the price of the 24-70mm f/2.8 S. The optical formula is licensed from Tamron's first 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III RXD, re-housed in a Nikon barrel with a control ring and Nikon's stepping-motor AF.

Close focus is a strength: 0.19m at 28mm gives 0.34x, handy for food and product shots. Like the Tamron, it gives up 4mm at the wide end and has no switches or function buttons. Nikon tuned it for video with reduced focus breathing and smooth exposure changes, and the barrel is dust and drip resistant with an antifouling front coating.

Reviewer consensus

Reviewers find it sharp in the centre throughout the range and good at the edges at 28mm and 50mm, with 75mm wide open the weakest setting. Bokeh is pleasant for a zoom, and AF is quiet and dependable, though not class-leading for fast action. Tests against the Tamron original show near-identical optical results.

The common criticisms are the missing 24-27mm, flare and ghosting in strong backlight, uncorrected distortion at 28mm, and the price compared with Tamron's own Z-mount 28-75mm G2, which tests sharper at 75mm, focuses faster and costs less.

Owner sentiment

Owners value having f/2.8 at a manageable size and price, and like the close focus and how it balances on Z5 and Z6 bodies. Many treat it as a lighter alternative to the 24-70mm f/2.8 S for events and family photos.

The complaints are the 28mm start, the lack of an AF/MF switch or L-Fn button, softness at 75mm wide open, and a feeling that Tamron's G2 is the better buy now that it is available for Z mount.
