Optical character

The G2 brought Tamron's best-selling standard zoom formula to Nikon Z in 2024: f/2.8, 550g, 67mm filters and a fair price. It costs well under half of the NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S and is lighter too. The VXD linear motor drives focus, and closest focus is 0.18m at 28mm (1:2.7), which works as quasi-macro for food and product shots.

It gives up 4mm at the wide end compared with 24-70s. In exchange it is compact and light, which suits Z5, Z6 and Zf bodies, and it supports Nikon's Eye AF, M/A focus override and in-camera lens corrections.

Reviewer consensus

Reviewers consider it the value pick among f/2.8 standard zooms on Nikon Z, as they did on Sony. It is sharp in the centre at all focal lengths, a little softer in the far corners at 75mm f/2.8, and AF is fast and quiet on Z bodies thanks to VXD.

The usual caveats are the 28mm short end, no aperture ring, control ring or custom buttons on the barrel (functions are set through Tamron Lens Utility over USB-C), and some flare in strong backlight. Next to Nikon's own 24-70mm f/4 S, it trades width for a stop of extra light.

Owner sentiment

Hobbyists and travel shooters on Nikon Z call it the best-value fast zoom in the system. The size and weight, the shared 67mm filter thread across Tamron's line, and the close focus get repeated praise.

Common wishes are a 24mm start and a lock switch. Some Nikon users miss the customisable control ring found on NIKKOR Z lenses, and a few notice zoom creep when the camera hangs face down.
