The AF 24mm F1.8 is a full-frame wide prime aimed at night skies, interiors and vlogging on a budget, and since December 2025 it has also been sold for Nikon Z. Its 14-element, 11-group design includes three ED, two aspherical and two high-refractive elements, with an STM motor and an 11-blade diaphragm. Focus breathing is practically absent, which makes it an easy recommendation for video on a Z body.
The all-metal barrel (72mm wide, about 438g in Z mount) carries a clickless aperture ring, AF/MF switch, a function button that can be assigned from the camera, and a USB-C port for firmware. The centre is crisp with good contrast from f/1.8, and longitudinal CA is very low. Corners need stopping down, and the distortion pattern is complex.

Reviewers found the centre very good wide open and the frame at its best around f/8, with corners noticeably weaker at f/1.8 and good by f/5.6. Vignetting is moderate (about 1.8 EV wide open), longitudinal CA very minor, and coma small and gone by f/5.6. The STM autofocus was fast, accurate and quiet for stills, about average for a stepping motor.
The drawbacks are a wavy pincushion distortion that is hard to correct cleanly, worse-than-average ghosting, busy bokeh balls up close, and tracking that early firmware handled inconsistently. Updated firmware improved AF behaviour.
Owner sentiment
Buyers like the solid metal build, the price, and the lack of breathing for handheld video and walk-around vlogging. On Nikon Z it is often bought as a far cheaper alternative to the Z 24mm f/1.8 S for astro and night cityscapes.
Complaints concern flare and ghosting with strong light sources, the size for a 24/1.8, and the need for firmware updates. Some owners also note the misleading spacing of the f/1.8 mark on the aperture ring. Owner feedback on the Z version specifically is still thin.
