Laowa 24mm f/14 2X Macro Probe (Nikon Z)

Reviewers value it for shots no other affordable lens can get: inside flowers, through grass, among insects, or underwater, with deep depth of field at close range. Sharpness is adequate at macro distances and better on Super 35 than full frame, but it is not crisp by normal macro standards.

Used as a regular wide-angle it is soft at the edges and shows barrel distortion. Contrast is low and flare comes easily. The warm (about 4000K) ring light has poor colour rendering, and the long, light tube moves in the wind, so a tripod or ground support is essential.

Videographers and nature shooters use it for product, food and insect shots that look unlike anything else. Many describe it as a niche lens that becomes a signature tool once mastered.

Common complaints are the light demands of f/14, dust and marks on the tiny front element showing up in every shot, the barrel flexing, and the 40cm length making it awkward to pack. Some owners would rather have bought the cine version with geared rings for video.
