Optical character

The Z 24mm f/1.8 S is the classic wide-angle prime in Nikon's f/1.8 S-line, made for interiors, street, landscapes and night scenes. Centre sharpness is excellent from f/1.8, and one ED and four aspherical elements keep lateral colour and coma well under control.

At 450g and 96.5mm it is larger than older 24mm f/1.8 designs, but it balances well on Z bodies. A two-motor multi-focusing system keeps AF quick and silent, the control ring can take focus, aperture or exposure compensation, and the barrel is dust and drip resistant. Background blur is smoother than most 24mm lenses manage.

Reviewer consensus

Reviewers rate it highly for centre and mid-frame sharpness wide open, low lateral chromatic aberration and good flare resistance thanks to Nano Crystal Coat. Bokeh is better than usual for a 24mm, though out-of-focus highlights can show a bright rim.

Criticisms are modest: some purple fringing on high-contrast edges at wide apertures, corners that need f/4 to match the centre on close test charts, and strong vignetting at f/1.8 without correction. One test sample was poorly centred, so check a new copy.

Owner sentiment

Owners treat it as a reliable everyday wide prime for travel, events and video. They like the silent AF, low breathing and how well it handles backlight.

Complaints focus on its size compared with the F-mount 24mm f/1.8G, the lack of an aperture ring or function button, and a price close to the 24-70mm f/4 S kit zoom. Some users find the rendering clean but a little clinical.
