Optical character
The 70mm F2.8 Macro Art is a DSLR-era 1:1 macro lens that Sigma also built with a native L-Mount. Its strength is optical: two FLD, two SLD and two aspherical elements in a floating two-group design keep it sharp across the frame from f/2.8, with negligible colour fringing and essentially zero distortion.
Focusing is by wire, driven by a coreless DC motor, and the inner barrel extends a long way as you focus closer, so working distance at 1:1 is short. The L-Mount version weighs 605g and is 129.8mm long. There is no aperture ring or stabilisation, and only the mount has a dust and splash gasket. Sigma has since discontinued it.
Reviewer consensus
Both lab tests rate the optics outstanding: very sharp in the centre from f/2.8 and very good to the full-frame edges, with negligible longitudinal and lateral colour fringing, practically zero distortion and good coma correction. Performance against bright light is rated good. The main optical flaw is noticeable vignetting at f/2.8 on full frame, which clears by about f/4.
Autofocus divides opinion. One review found the motor quick and quiet; the other found it slow and far from silent, though accurate. Both praise the precise, wide-travel manual focus for macro work, and one notes the extending barrel leaves only about 6cm of working distance at 1:1.
