Optical character
The 65mm F2 was one of the first lenses in Sigma's I series of compact all-metal primes, released in 2020. Its 65mm focal length sits between a standard and a short portrait lens, which suits everyday shooting as well as head-and-shoulders portraits. On L-Mount it is 405g and 74.7mm long, and Sigma also offers it in silver on that mount.
The optics use 12 elements in 9 groups. One SLD element controls axial colour fringing, and two glass-moulded aspherical elements correct spherical aberration, coma and astigmatism. Sigma also designed it to limit lemon-shaped and swirly bokeh. A stepping motor drives autofocus. The aluminium barrel has an aperture ring with an A position, an AF/MF switch and a rubber-sealed mount. It comes with a metal hood and both a plastic and a magnetic metal front cap.
Reviewer consensus
Reviewers found it exceptionally sharp across the whole frame from f/2, with one lab test calling its resolution record-breaking. Axial colour fringing and coma are very well controlled, astigmatism is slight, and bokeh is smooth and attractive for an f/2 lens. Flare resistance was rated very good. Lateral colour fringing can show slightly towards the corners when uncorrected.
The consistent weak points are strong vignetting at f/2 on full frame and some pincushion distortion. Autofocus is quiet and efficient. The metal build and handling were highly praised, but the aperture ring has no de-click option. Lenstip questioned whether the price is easy to justify for a focal length that overlaps with common 50mm and 85mm primes, while Digital Camera World called it very good value.
