Optical character
The 65mm F2 sits between a standard and a portrait lens, and it is the sharpest of Sigma's compact I series primes. One SLD element and a pair of glass-molded aspherical elements give crisp detail and very little colour fringing from f/2.
The slightly long focal length gives natural perspective for half-length portraits, details and street work without the compression of an 85mm. It has the I series metal barrel, a clicked aperture ring, a metal hood and a magnetic metal cap, and it weighs 405g on Sony E.
Reviewer consensus
Reviewers consistently report excellent sharpness wide open across most of the frame, with low longitudinal and lateral CA and well-behaved bokeh that avoids swirl and harsh outlines. Flare control is good and build quality stands out at the price.
The drawbacks are a stepping-motor AF that is reliable but audible and not built for fast action, visible focus breathing, and a 0.55m close focus. Some note that 65mm is an unusual focal length that either clicks with a photographer or doesn't.
Owner sentiment
Owners often call it their favourite I series lens and use it as a compact portrait and everyday short tele. The rendering and the feel of the aperture and focus rings come up repeatedly.
Quirks mentioned are AF noise in quiet video, slower focusing in dim light, and the magnetic cap coming loose in a bag. A few owners find 65mm too close to 50mm to justify carrying both.
