Optical character
Leica's 75mm for the SL system sits between a standard lens and a classic portrait tele, and it is the more versatile of the two APO-Summicron-SL portrait primes. Eleven elements in nine groups, most of them in glass with anomalous partial dispersion plus one aspherical element, give it apochromatic correction, and a floating element holds performance down to 0.5m, where it reaches 1:5.
Focusing uses stepping motors with Leica's Dual Syncro Drive, which Leica rates at about 250 milliseconds for the full throw. The metal barrel is sealed against dust and moisture and carries no switches: aperture, AF/MF and the focus-by-wire ring are all handled from the camera. At 720g and 102mm long with a 67mm filter thread, it is big and heavy for a 75mm f/2.
Reviewer consensus
Testers find it extremely sharp, with outstanding centre resolution from f/2, very good results on the APS-C edge and good results at the full-frame corners. Lateral colour is very well corrected, longitudinal fringing is slight, distortion is essentially zero and astigmatism is very low. Autofocus is accurate, quick in everyday use and silent, and the lens balances well on the SL. Visible corner vignetting at f/2 fades by f/4.
The reservations concern the price more than the optics. Coma, the rendering of out-of-focus highlights, flare resistance against bright light and autofocus speed were judged only middling for a lens this expensive, and focus breathing is strong, which matters for video. Lenstip also calls it significantly big and heavy and lists the price as a drawback.
