Optical character
Sigma designed this 50mm F1.4 Art for mirrorless cameras from the start, replacing its DSLR-era 50mm Art. In L-Mount it weighs 670g and is 109.5mm long, which is lighter and shorter than the adapted DG HSM design it replaced. It was the first DG DN Art lens to use Sigma's HLA linear motor, which drives a single double-sided aspherical focus element.
The optics use 14 elements in 11 groups, including one SLD and three aspherical elements. Sigma's stated goal was low astigmatism, low field curvature and low sagittal coma flare from f/1.4. The barrel has an aperture ring with a click switch and a lock, an AFL button, an AF/MF switch and dust and splash sealing. The front element has a water- and oil-repellent coating. On L-Mount you can switch the focus ring between linear and non-linear response, and the lens works with Sigma's USB Dock.
Reviewer consensus
Reviewers found it very sharp at f/1.4, with excellent centre detail and good to excellent edges. Lateral colour fringing is negligible, coma is effectively absent and bokeh is smooth with only slight onion-ring texture. The 11-blade aperture keeps highlights round when stopped down a little. Flare resistance was rated good to very good.
The recurring criticisms are heavy vignetting at f/1.4, noticeable pincushion distortion that relies on in-camera correction, and clear focus breathing for video. Autofocus was described as quiet, quick and accurate. Some reviewers saw longitudinal colour fringing wide open that is gone by f/2. Most called it strong value next to pricier 50mm f/1.2 and f/1.4 options, though it is large and heavy for a fifty.
