Optical character
7Artisans' AF 50mm F1.8 arrived on L-Mount in April 2025, a year after the Sony E original, giving Lumix, Sigma fp and Leica SL owners an inexpensive autofocus fifty with an aperture ring. An STM stepping motor drives focus, and the 11-element, 9-group design uses one ED, two aspherical and two high-refractive elements. At portrait distances it is sharp across the frame from f/1.8.
It is a big fifty for its speed: 72 x 104mm and about 421g. In exchange you get a metal barrel, an 11-blade diaphragm, a stepless aperture ring with an A position, an AF/MF switch and a USB-C port in the mount for firmware updates. Distortion is practically zero and out-of-focus areas render smoothly, though bright highlights can show onion-ring texture.
Reviewer consensus
Testers found centre sharpness very good at f/1.8 and excellent from f/2.8 to f/8. At portrait distances the lens is sharp across the frame wide open, but the corners at infinity need f/5.6 to f/8 to catch up. Distortion is practically zero, bokeh is smooth with a gradual transition, and autofocus is quick, quiet and accurate enough for everyday stills, though not completely silent.
The weak points are very strong optical vignetting (light falloff of about 2.5 EV at f/1.8), clearly visible but correctable lateral CA, bokeh fringing wide open, onion rings in highlight discs, slight focus shift between f/2.8 and f/4 and only average flare resistance. The stepless aperture ring is easy to knock out of A because it has no lock, and the size and weight surprise people expecting a compact budget fifty.
