Optical character
7Artisans' first autofocus lens, a full-frame 50mm f/1.8, reached Nikon Z in mid-2024, giving Z shooters eye-detect AF and an aperture ring for less than Nikon's Z 50mm f/1.8 S. An STM stepping motor drives focus, and the 11-element design uses one ED, two aspherical and two high-refractive elements. At portrait distances it is sharp across the frame from f/1.8.
It is a big fifty: 72mm wide, about 104mm long and roughly 450g in Z mount, bulkier than Nikon's Z 50mm f/1.8 S. In exchange you get a metal-and-polycarbonate barrel, an 11-blade diaphragm, a clickless aperture ring with an A position, an AF/MF switch and a USB-C port for firmware updates. Out-of-focus areas render smoothly, with transitions that suit portraits more than test charts.
Reviewer consensus
Testers found centre and mid-frame sharpness very good wide open with no mid-zone dip, while the corners at infinity need f/5.6–f/8 to catch up. At normal portrait distances the lens looks good across the frame at f/1.8, distortion is very low and bokeh is smooth, in the same league as more expensive fifties. Autofocus is accurate enough for everyday stills and eye-AF, though not completely silent.
The weak points are optical vignetting (about 2.5 EV at f/1.8), strong but correctable lateral CA, some focus shift between f/2.8 and f/4, and only average flare resistance. The size and weight also put off reviewers who expected a compact budget fifty. Most published testing used the Sony E version; the Z version shares its optics.
Owner sentiment
Owners mostly bought it as a cheap portrait and everyday fifty with real autofocus, and are generally happy with face and eye detection once the lens firmware is current; owner feedback on the Z version specifically is thinner than for the Sony model. The tactile clickless aperture ring and the metal-feeling barrel get positive comments, as does the price against Nikon's own 50mm f/1.8 S.
Common complaints concern bulk for a 50mm f/1.8, an AF/MF switch that is easy to knock, and early firmware that needed updating over USB-C for full camera compatibility. Some users note the heavy vignetting wide open in skies and even backgrounds.
