Optical character
The mirrorless 50mm F1.4 Art replaced Sigma's huge DSLR-era design with a 660g lens that is sharp from f/1.4. It was the first DG DN Art lens to use Sigma's HLA linear motor, which moves a single double-sided aspherical focus element for fast, quiet focusing.
One SLD and three aspherical elements keep astigmatism, field curvature and sagittal coma flare in check, so point lights stay clean toward the edges. The 11-blade aperture gives round highlights, and the barrel carries an AFL button, AF/MF switch, de-clickable aperture ring with lock, and dust and splash sealing.
Reviewer consensus
Reviewers find it excellent in the centre at f/1.4 and very good to the corners, with low coma and well-controlled colour fringing. Autofocus is a clear step up from older Sigma stepping-motor primes, and the bokeh is smooth with only mild cat's-eye shapes near the edges.
The criticisms are size and weight next to Sony's FE 50mm F1.4 GM, noticeable vignetting wide open, and some focus breathing. Most conclude it is one of the best-value fast fifties on Sony E.
Owner sentiment
Owners describe it as a dependable all-rounder for portraits, events and low light, and many say it outperforms the cheaper f/1.8 fifties they moved up from. The click switch and aperture lock get frequent praise from video shooters.
Complaints focus on the 111.5mm length and front weight on compact bodies, the large petal hood, and Sony's third-party lens restrictions on burst rate with some bodies.
