Optical character

One of the original FE launch lenses alongside the A7 and A7R, the Sonnar 55mm F1.8 was designed to show what the new full-frame mirrorless system could resolve. Three aspherical elements, one of them an AA element, make it very sharp from f/1.8, with high contrast and crisp micro-detail.

It is compact at 281g, with a metal barrel, a 49mm filter thread and dust and moisture resistance. Rendering is clean and punchy rather than soft and dreamy. Out-of-focus areas are generally smooth, though highlights can show some outlining, and the 0.5m close focus is long for a 55mm.

Reviewer consensus

Reviewers called it one of the sharpest standard primes available when it launched, with excellent centre and good corner resolution wide open and low distortion. Contrast and colour are strong thanks to the T* coating, and AF is quick and quiet for a lens of its era.

Criticisms are the high price for an f/1.8 lens, noticeable vignetting wide open, some longitudinal colour fringing and a tendency to flare and veil when the sun is near the frame. Close focus of 0.5m and the lack of controls feel dated next to newer Sony primes.

Owner sentiment

Owners value it as a small, sharp everyday lens that balances well on A7-series bodies and remains a favourite for street and travel. Many say it is the lens they keep when they sell other fifties.

Complaints focus on price, the plain design with no AF/MF switch or aperture ring, some purple fringing in high-contrast scenes and the long minimum focus distance. Its discontinuation at some retailers has pushed buyers to the used market.
