Optical character
Sony's first f/1.2 autofocus prime is the reference standard 50 for the system. Three XA elements keep it sharp across the frame wide open, which most f/1.2 designs don't manage, and the 11-blade aperture keeps out-of-focus highlights round as you stop down.
Rendering is clean and modern. Transitions into blur are smooth, longitudinal colour fringing is low for the speed, and there is little of the glow that older fast fifties show at full aperture. Four XD linear motors move a heavy focus group quickly enough for Eye-AF tracking at f/1.2.
Reviewer consensus
Reviewers rank it among the best fast standard primes on any mount. Centre resolution is excellent from f/1.2, with corners close behind by f/2. Bokeh is described as smooth with little onion-ring texture, and focus breathing is well controlled for stills and hybrid video.
The usual complaints are size and price. At 778g it is far bigger than the f/1.4 alternatives, and some testers say the FE 50mm F1.4 GM gets most of the way there for much less. Vignetting at f/1.2 is strong without correction.
Owner sentiment
Owners mostly shoot portraits, weddings and low light, and they say AF hit rate wide open is the reason they bought it over manual f/1.2 lenses. The aperture ring, de-click switch and two focus-hold buttons get regular praise from video users.
Common complaints are the weight on smaller bodies like the A7C series and the large 72mm hood. A few owners mention cat's-eye highlights toward the corners at f/1.2, which is normal for the design.
