Optical character
Sigma's 50mm F1.2 Art is an f/1.2 standard prime at 745g and 108.8mm long on L-Mount, which Sigma called the lightest AF 50mm f/1.2 for full-frame mirrorless at launch. Two redesigned HLA linear motors, about 25% thinner than the previous HLA, drive two floating focus groups, so focusing is fast and quiet despite the large glass.
The 17-element design with four aspherical elements targets high resolution from f/1.2 across the focus range, with smooth bokeh from Sigma's first 13-blade aperture and low focus breathing for video. The barrel has an AFL button, AF/MF switch, an aperture ring with click and lock switches, dust and splash sealing and a water- and oil-repellent front element. On compatible L-Mount cameras the manual focus ring can be set to linear or non-linear response.
Reviewer consensus
Reviewers found it very sharp in the centre at f/1.2, with the corners a little softer until about f/2.8, and a flat field. Longitudinal colour fringing is negligible for the aperture and lateral fringing very low, coma is well corrected and flare is hard to provoke even with the sun in frame. Bokeh is large and smooth with no onion-ring texture, and the 13 blades keep highlights round when stopped down. Autofocus is quick, silent and accurate for stills and video, and breathing is lower than Sigma's own 50mm F1.4 Art.
The main weakness is vignetting in the full-frame corners wide open, which Lenstip measured as very high. Some note slight green/blue fringing on high-contrast edges at f/1.2, that it is still large and slightly front-heavy on small bodies, and that depth of field at f/1.2 needs careful focus placement. Most conclude it competes with Sony's 50mm f/1.2 GM for considerably less money.
