Optical character

Sigma's 50mm F1.2 is an f/1.2 standard prime at 740g on Sony E, lighter than Sony's own FE 50mm F1.2 GM and considerably cheaper. Two newly miniaturised HLA linear motors drive two floating focus groups, so AF is fast and quiet despite the large glass.

The design aims for high resolution from f/1.2 across the whole focus range, with smooth, colour-free bokeh helped by Sigma's first 13-blade aperture. Focus breathing is well suppressed for video, and the barrel adds an AFL button, a de-clickable aperture ring with lock, dust and splash sealing and a water- and oil-repellent front element.

Reviewer consensus

Reviewers rate it among the best f/1.2 fifties for mirrorless: sharp in the centre from f/1.2, very good across the frame by f/2, with creamy backgrounds and well-controlled longitudinal colour fringing for the aperture. AF is quick and accurate for stills and video, and focus breathing is low.

The usual caveats are heavy vignetting wide open, some cat's-eye highlights toward the corners, and a size and weight that is still a step up from Sigma's own 50mm F1.4 DG DN. Most testers conclude it matches or comes close to the Sony GM optically for substantially less money.

Owner sentiment

Owners shooting portraits, weddings and events praise the rendering at f/1.2 and say the lens is manageable for a full day. Many bought it instead of the Sony 50mm F1.2 GM and do not regret the saving.

Complaints are mostly about bulk on smaller bodies, the large petal hood, and Sony's limits on third-party lenses, such as burst rates capped at 15fps on some high-speed bodies. A few owners note it needs care with focus at f/1.2 on moving subjects in dim light.
