Optical character
Launched in 2023 as the 14mm F1.4 DG DN | Art and renamed 14mm F1.4 DG | Art for units shipped from 2026, this was the first rectilinear 14mm f/1.4 interchangeable lens, built squarely for night-sky work. Its 19 elements include three FLD, one SLD and four aspherical elements, among them a 79mm-diameter asphere, with sagittal coma flare given particular attention so stars keep their shape toward the corners. Sigma says the rename did not change the optics.
The L-Mount version weighs 1,170g and is 149.9mm long. Astro-specific touches include an MFL switch that disables the focus ring, a lip that holds a lens-heater strip clear of the front element, a locking rear sheet-filter holder, a locking front cover cap with slots for two spare filters, and a detachable Arca-Swiss-compatible tripod socket. It also has an HLA linear AF motor, an AFL button, a de-clickable and lockable aperture ring, and dust and splash sealing. The fixed hood means no screw-in filters.
Reviewer consensus
Reviewers found it sharp across the whole frame at f/1.4, with stars staying point-like into the corners, very low sagittal coma, and axial and lateral colour fringing kept to negligible levels. Distortion is moderate for a 14mm, so the profile correction is light and costs little corner detail. Autofocus is fast and quiet, and the astro features (focus lock, heater lip, filter storage in the cap, tripod foot) are consistently praised as well thought out.
The drawbacks are physical and practical: at about 1.17kg it is more than twice the weight of Sony's 14mm f/1.8 G Master, it cannot take front filters, and rear filters rule out polarisers and must be changed with the lens off the camera. One test also noted that barrel distortion visibly increases as focus moves toward the minimum distance. The overall verdict is that it is an outstanding specialist lens for astro and landscape work, and close to unchallenged on L-Mount.
