Testers found it sharp across the frame wide open, with stars staying well defined in the far corners and resolution comparable to Sony's much lighter 14mm f/1.8 GM. Coma and astigmatism are very well controlled, which is the whole point of the design, and the HLA motor focuses quickly and quietly.

The drawbacks are physical: it weighs more than twice as much as the Sony, it is long, and it cannot take front filters. Corner vignetting at f/1.4 is clearly visible before correction, and one review noted an unusual change in distortion as focus moves.

Astrophotographers who own it say it makes faster shutter speeds and lower ISOs possible, and many describe it as the best astro lens they have used. The focus lock switch, heater lip and tripod foot are popular, practical touches.

The usual complaints are weight and bulk for hiking, the lack of front filters for daytime landscape work, and price, which rose further when Sigma moved it to made-to-order sales in 2025.
