Optical character
Sigma calls the 135mm F1.4 Art the world's first autofocus 135mm f/1.4, and it is built for portraits: its effective aperture is larger than that of Sigma's 105mm F1.4 "Bokeh Master". Four large FLD elements suppress axial colour fringing, and a 13-blade diaphragm keeps highlights round when stopped down.
Two HLA linear motors drive separate floating focus groups. The L-Mount version weighs 1,430g and is 135.5mm long, and it can switch between linear and non-linear focus-ring response, which the Sony E version cannot. There are two AFL buttons, an aperture ring with click and lock switches, dust and splash sealing, an Arca-Swiss tripod socket and a CFRP hood with a locking button.
Reviewer consensus
Reviewers found it sharp across the frame at f/1.4, peaking around f/4-5.6, with only slight softening wide open at close and portrait distances. Bokeh is the standout: very smooth, free of onion rings, with natural highlight shapes into the corners and very little bokeh fringing. Coma and lateral colour fringing are minimal, and flare resistance is very good for a lens with such a large entrance pupil.
The dual-HLA autofocus was fast and accurate in difficult light. The downsides are weight and size, a 1.1m minimum focus, vignetting of around two stops wide open, and poorly defined sunstars. Reviews disagree on distortion: one measured strong uncorrected pincushion, another found almost none. Both judged it good value for what it does.
