Optical character
The AF 135mm F1.8 is part of 7Artisans' MAX line and is the cheapest autofocus 135mm f/1.8 for L-Mount. Its 16-element, 13-group design uses six ED and five high-refractive elements behind a 12-blade aperture. It is very sharp from f/1.8, and vignetting is unusually low for a fast 135.
It is a big metal lens, about 1025g in L-Mount, with 82mm filters. The 0.68m close focus gives 0.25x magnification. Unlike the Nikon Z version's control ring, the L-Mount version has a clicked aperture ring with an A position. It also has two Fn buttons (on E and L both share one custom function), an AF/MF switch, a dust-sealing gasket at the mount, an anti-smudge front coating and USB-C for firmware updates. An STM stepping motor drives the focus.
Reviewer consensus
Reviewers agree the optics punch well above the price. The centre is excellent at f/1.8, the corners are good wide open and excellent by f/5.6, and at portrait distances it matches or beats more expensive 135s. Vignetting is lower than in any comparable 135 tested, coma and colour fringing are very well corrected, distortion is negligible, and the 12-blade aperture keeps bokeh round and smooth.
The weaknesses are mechanical and video-related. Veiling flare is easy to provoke without the hood, focus breathing is clearly visible, and AF speed is only average, with occasional hesitation, front-focus misses and no focus limiter. Testers also report a hood with no lock and an aperture ring that slips out of A easily. One reviewer had to replace a decentred first copy. Firmware updates fixed several early AF problems, and the lack of a comparable AF rival on L-Mount makes it easier to recommend there.
