Optical character
The 135mm F1.8 Art is Sigma's DSLR-era portrait telephoto, also made with a native L-Mount. It is sharp at f/1.8 well into the corners, and two FLD plus two SLD elements, with no aspherical elements, keep colour fringing low and highlights free of onion rings.
It focuses down to 87.5cm for 1:5 magnification, useful for detail shots, and has a three-position focus limiter. The L-Mount version weighs 1,220g and is 138.9mm long, with HSM autofocus, an 82mm filter thread and no aperture ring, tripod collar or stabilisation. Sigma has since discontinued it.
Reviewer consensus
Reviewers rated it among the sharpest 135mm lenses: excellent in the centre wide open and very good in the corners at f/1.8, reaching very good to excellent by f/4. Lateral colour fringing is very low, longitudinal fringing is moderate and mostly gone by f/4, distortion is a slight pincushion, and vignetting is well controlled for a fast telephoto. Bokeh is smooth with no onion-ring effect, though highlights lose shape in the corners.
The HSM autofocus measured fast and quiet with good repeatability, with some slide-to-focus in low light. The main criticisms are weight and front-heavy balance, strong focus breathing, no stabilisation, and sealing that stops at a mount gasket.
