Optical character

Sigma's 135mm F1.4 is the first autofocus 135mm f/1.4 for full-frame mirrorless, built for portraits with a 96mm effective aperture. That is larger than Sigma's 105mm F1.4 "Bokeh Master" and close to its 200mm F2. Four large FLD elements control axial colour fringing, and a 13-blade diaphragm keeps out-of-focus highlights round when stopped down.

The cost is size. It weighs 1420g, takes 105mm filters and comes with a tripod socket. Two HLA linear motors drive separate focus groups. The barrel has two AFL buttons, an aperture ring with click and lock switches, dust- and splash-resistant sealing and a CFRP hood with a locking button.

Reviewer consensus

Early reviews describe it as exceptionally sharp at f/1.4, with high contrast across the frame and very little longitudinal CA. The background blur is large and smooth, and vignetting is lower than the aperture would suggest. Testers place it at or above Sony's FE 135mm F1.8 GM for resolution, with a clearly shallower depth of field.

The dual-HLA autofocus is fast and accurate enough for moving portrait subjects and events. The main criticisms are weight and bulk, which make it a deliberate choice rather than an all-day lens, the 1.1m minimum focus distance, and a price well above Sigma's older DSLR-era 135mm F1.8.

Owner sentiment

Owners who shoot portraits and weddings call the rendering distinctive and say the subject separation is unlike anything else in the system. The aperture ring, the locking hood and the included tripod socket are well received.

The main complaint is handling. Many say 1420g is tiring handheld over a long session and unbalanced on small bodies. Some question whether the gain over the much lighter 135mm F1.8 GM justifies the weight. The 105mm filter size makes ND filters costly.
