Testers of the optically identical Sony FE version found centre sharpness very good to excellent, even at f/2.8 in the wider half of the range, with edges acceptable on full frame and best stopped down to f/5.6 to f/11. Colour fringing is low, autofocus from the linear stepping motor is silent and efficient, focus breathing is negligible, and point lights stay well rounded wide open, which suits astro work.

The compromise is a heavy reliance on in-camera correction: raw distortion at 14mm is very strong and vignetting on full frame is heavy until profiles are applied. Opinions on bright-light performance differ, with one test calling it weak and another finding ghosting and flare well controlled. Reviewers accept these trade-offs for the size, weight and filter thread.
