Optical character
A light ultra-wide zoom for landscapes, architecture, travel and handheld video. It weighs 345g, keeps the same 89.8mm length at every focal length and is sized to match the LUMIX S 20-60mm, so it can sit on a gimbal without rebalancing. It takes 77mm filters.
The 14-element optic includes an aspherical ED element, an aspherical element, three ED and one UHR element. Focus is by a stepping motor with inner focusing. It focuses to 0.15m and reaches 0.5x at 28mm, which is unusual for an ultra-wide zoom. The seven-blade aperture closes to f/22. The barrel is dust, splash and freeze resistant with a fluorine-coated front element, and its only control is an AF/MF switch.

Reviewers are pleasantly surprised by the optics for the money. Centre sharpness is high and consistent through the zoom range, and the edges hold up well at most settings; the main weak spot is the corners at the longer focal lengths, which need f/11 to sharpen fully. Colour fringing is almost absent, and vignetting at 14mm f/4 is mild. Autofocus is fast and practically silent, and the half-macro close focus adds real flexibility.
Raw files show strong barrel distortion at 14mm, so the lens relies on in-camera or software correction. The f/4-5.6 aperture is modest next to f/2.8 rivals, and the controls are basic: no aperture ring and just an AF/MF switch. Testers see it as excellent value with useful weather sealing.
