Optical character

Canon's 10x travel superzoom for full-frame RF bodies. It covers 24mm to 240mm in 750g, with 5-stop IS and a Nano USM motor, so one lens can handle landscapes, street, portraits and distant subjects on a trip.

The 21-element design uses two UD elements and one aspherical element and was designed around digital distortion correction: the camera forces correction on and it cannot be turned off. A lock holds the zoom at 24mm, and the front ring switches between focus and control functions. There is no weather sealing.

Reviewer consensus

Testers rate it unusually good for a superzoom. The centre is sharp from 24mm to 240mm, with peak resolution at or near maximum aperture, so there is little need to stop down. Edges are good in the middle of the range but weak at 24mm and weaker still at 240mm, and stopping down does not fix them. Uncorrected raw files show extreme barrel distortion at 24mm, with corners clipped to black, so a correction profile is essential; vignetting is obvious wide open at both ends.

Autofocus is fast and quiet for stills and video, with occasional hunting in low light at the long end. One test found the stabiliser most useful at long focal lengths but otherwise no better than most. Background blur at long focal lengths is better than expected. Build is plastic but tight and lacks sealing, and the lens is judged good value, especially in a kit.
